Top 5 Locations for Lifestyle Portraits in Key West
Key West is a tiny island. But, it’s an island which is FULL of vibrant color, stunning sunsets, and loads of history—making it the perfect place for lifestyle portraits. Over the years I’ve narrowed down the list of my Top 5 Locations for Lifestyle Portraits in Key West! Whether you’re visiting for a family or couples vacation, celebrating the birth of your child, or just looking for a beautiful backdrop for some keep-sake photos, Key West has a variety of unique spots that offer both charm and natural beauty.
Here are my go-to favorite locations for lifestyle sessions in Key West:
1. Smathers Beach: Sun, Sand, and Stunning Views
Smathers Beach is one of Key West’s most popular beaches and for good reason. It’s my number one go-to spot for portraits because of it’s diverse landscape. With its long stretch of soft, white sand and crystal-clear waters, it provides a perfect setting for relaxed family portraits. The wide-open space allows for a variety of poses featuring sea grass, palm-trees, and bright blue waters.
Not only is it scenic, but the long beach allows for kids to run around and play in between pictures leading to some beautiful, and fun, candid shots.
Timing:
Smathers doesn’t always have the best view of the sun setting but it nearly always has the most beautiful golden light during golden hour. If you want some golden hour shots, then I highly recommend capturing some moments during golden hour. However, sunrise is one of my personal favorite times to enjoy Smathers. It’s calm, peaceful, quiet, and typically a little bit more welcoming to nature. That’s the reason it is number one on my list for Top 5 Locations for Your Lifestyle Session!
Best for: A Boho-Beachy Vibe to your images

2. Truman Annex: Charming Streets, Tropical Foliage and Historic Homes
The historic charm of the Truman Annex provides a unique, lush green backdrop for family photos. Picture-perfect streets lined with palm trees and pastel-colored cottages create an atmosphere full of character and warmth. During certain times of year you can also find vibrant tropical flowers in bloom!
The Truman Annex was initially built as the residential area for the Navy which has always had a large impact on Key West. The rich history, iconic Key West style home builds, white picket fences, lush tropical gardens all transport visitors back in time. That is why it’s so high on my Top 5 Locations for Your Lifestyle Session!
Best for: Family portraits with a mix of vibrant tropical foliage and classic Key West cottage charm.
3. Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park: Where the Sun Meets the Sea
For the BEST spot in Key West to see sunset I highly recommend Ft. Zachary Taylor State Park. With wide scenic overlooks into the Atlantic and Florida Bay, visitors get a scenic panoramic view of the sun as it melts into the sea. This park offers lush greenery, beautiful beach access, and historic structures like the old fort itself, making it a versatile location for various types of photos.
Although the park is a public State Park they do have a site fee for professional photography on site which might not be in everyones budget. If you have your heart set on capturing golden hour with some magical sailboats in the backdrop then I highly recommend you ask me more about the site fee and how to coordinate a session on site.
Best for: Nature-filled portraits with a mix of beach, history, and lush landscapes.
4. Resort Accommodations: Make your Home Away from Home the backdrop to your portraits
For those staying at scenic, waterfront resorts in Key West, I always recommend keeping it close and utilizing their resort accommodations as the backdrop for their family and couples portraits. A few of my top recommendations are; Casa Marina Beach Resort, The Reach, Southernmost Beach Resort, Opal Key and Sunset Key Resort.
Featured below are several captures from various sessions at the beautiful Casa Marina Beach Resort!
Best for: Whimsical, Convenient, Stunning
5. Garrison Bight Marina: Quirky Key West Charm Meets
Mallory Square is known for its breathtaking sunset views, making it one of the most iconic spots in Key West. While it’s a bustling area, it’s also a fantastic location for family portraits, especially during golden hour when the sun casts a soft glow over the water and sky. The view of the Gulf of Mexico, the boats, and the vibrant colors of the sky create a perfect canvas for family portraits. You can also capture the lively atmosphere of the area with performers, street artists, and the crowds in the background.
Best for: Family portraits at sunset, with iconic Key West views.
