Whispers of the Past: Hemingway Home Wedding

There’s a hush that settles over the Ernest Hemingway Home in Key West when the museum closes. A sacred, cinematic quiet lingers in the garden light. It dances through banyan branches, and wraps around Spanish archways as the many mystical six-toed-cats lounge in the dapled light.

It’s this mystical charm that speaks to so many couples in love and why, on this day, a dream wedding at the Hemingway Home Museum came to life. Elegant, soulful, and steeped in nostalgic charm.

Planning their Dream Wedding

Planning a destination wedding is always an adventure, and for this couple it was no exception. Maureen (affectionately named Mo) & Tyler dreamed of an intimate celebration, surrounded only by their closest friends and family. But as the excitement grew, so did the guest list—because when love is this contagious, more people want to be part of the story. Fortunately, the Ernest Hemingway Home was the perfect fit. With its lush gardens and historic charm, the venue gracefully accommodated their larger group, creating an atmosphere that still felt personal, warm, and deeply meaningful.

Starting the Day

Selecting the right location to get ready is SO important. It can set the tone for the entire day. Mo & Tyler both planned to get ready at neighboring vacation rentals. When a water pipe burst in Mo’s bridal suite it seemed the whole day could have been ruined! But she chose to see it as the blessing of rain as all the gals packed up their bags and walked over to the neighboring Light House Hotel.

The Lighthouse Hotel overlooks the Hemingway Home and provides a stunning lush garden for it’s guests. It turned out to be the absolute perfect spot for everyone to get excited about the wedding day.

Timing & Pacing

Every couple has different priorities for their wedding day, which is why I always tailor timelines to fit their needs. Mo & Tyler knew they had a big bridal party and lots of family they wanted included in photos, but they also didn’t want to miss out on cocktail hour. So how do you fit it all in? You get creative.

Shortly after Mo & Tyler were dressed and ready, we scheduled a private moment for them to see each other. In a tucked-away garden, they shared their first look—an intimate and emotional moment as future husband and wife. First looks are such a beautiful way to preserve the magic and romance of the day while also giving couples time together, just the two of them, before the ceremony begins. Another bonus? It allows time for bridal party and family portraits beforehand, so once the vows are said, everyone can jump straight into celebrating at cocktail hour!

Vows Beneath the Banyans

As the ceremony unfolded beneath swaying palms and old-growth banyans, the ceremony space took on a dreamlike stillness. Guests were wrapped in the lush textures of tropical flora and the weathered elegance of Spanish Colonial stonework. With every glance, every vow, and every breeze that moved through the garden, it felt as though each moment had always belonged to this place. As if the story had been waiting for this couple all along.

The celebration flowed effortlessly from day into night. Signature 35mm film captured every detail in soft grain and golden tones, casting a nostalgic glow over each moment. From candlelit dinners under string lights to slow dances beneath the stars, the reception flowed from laughter to music, ending in a joy that lingered long after the last guest wandered into the warm Key West night.

More than just a venue, the Ernest Hemingway Home is a feeling. One of romance, history, and something beautifully untamed. It’s where the past and present meet softly, and where love doesn’t just arrive, but settles in and stays.

How to Plan A Dream Wedding at the Hemingway Home Museum

  • Plan for golden hour portraits in the garden. Dappled sunlight and Spanish archways make for timeless images.
  • Make the most of the second floor. The natural light and vintage character are ideal for quiet bridal portraits.
  • Incorporate film photography. If you love that soft, nostalgic touch. It suits the venue’s mood perfectly.
  • Lean into the setting. Vintage decor and lush florals complement the home’s old-world elegance beautifully.
  • Keep it intimate. The venue shines best when shared with your closest loved ones in a relaxed, romantic atmosphere.
