I love Key West.

For goodness sake, I uprooted my life to live and work down in this tropical paradise! So, I know how special this place is!

Key West, with its vibrant culture, stunning sunsets, and picturesque landscapes, is an ideal location for a family portrait session. Whether you’re visiting for a family vacation or you’re a local wanting to capture some Key West Memories, here’s how to make the most of your family photo experience in this tropical paradise.

1. The Perfect Setting

Explore Iconic Locations

Key West has numerous picturesque spots perfect for family portraits. So the world is your oyster! But it really depends on what aesthetic you are aiming for in your family portraits. Here are a few of my personal favorites:

  • Smathers Beach: The largest public beach in Key West, Smathers offers stunning ocean views and boho vibes with its palm trees and dune grass. The soft sand is perfect for kids to play, ideal for capturing candid moments!
  • Truman Annex: With lush tropical foliage providing shade, Truman Annex is perfect for families looking to enjoy the tropics without the heat. The charming Key West homes create a lovely backdrop.
  • Fort Zachary Taylor State Park: This park is the best spot for sunsets in Key West! While the natural beach isn’t the most comfortable for sunbathing, it’s perfect for capturing turquoise waters and golden sunsets. Note: a photo permit is required for vendors.
  • Garrison Bight Marina: This historic marina features shrimp boats and fishing charters, providing a rustic Key West backdrop for portraits that evoke a sense of nostalgia.
  • Private Resort or Home: If you’re staying at one of Key West’s scenic properties, let me know! We can explore fantastic photography options right at your location.
  • Higgs Beach and White Street Pier: This quieter area, largely a memorial, offers a peaceful atmosphere with the West Martello Fort Tower and picturesque pier—perfect for a soothing sunset experience.
  • Southernmost Point Buoy: An iconic landmark, this colorful buoy is a fun spot for capturing the southernmost point of the continental U.S.
  • Old Town Key West: The historic architecture and colorful conch houses in Old Town add unique character to your photos. Enjoy wandering the charming streets for candid moments!

2. Timing Your Session

The ideal time for a family portrait session in Key West is during the golden hour—early morning or just before sunset. The soft, warm light at these times enhances your portraits and beautifully complements the island’s scenery.

Locations for sunset are also dependent on the time of year. Key West is a small island so the sunsets happen at different spots throughout the island. Be sure to ask me about where would be the best spot for sunset!

3. Choosing the Right Outfits

Dress comfortably and coordinate outfits that reflect your family’s style while complementing the vibrant surroundings. Light, airy fabrics in pastel or tropical hues work wonderfully. Avoid overly busy patterns, as they can distract from your beautiful backdrop and expressions. I also recommend light neutrals, pastels, or navy and black attire. Neons and bright bold colors tend to be a bit too bold.

4. Capture the Essence of Family

Incorporate meaningful activities into your session. Whether it’s enjoying ice cream, playing on the beach, or strolling hand-in-hand down the street, candid moments will evoke genuine smiles and laughter. These interactions will make your portraits feel more authentic and personal.
